Welcome Bay is a decile 4 contributing primary school with a roll of approximately 300 and growing rapidly. It is nestled in the divers and growing community of beautiful Welcome Bay in the Tauranga area.
Our children are the school’s most valuable resource. At Welcome Bay we strive to provide opportunities that will enable our students to become the best that they can be, to help them to ‘fly’ in their lives and learning. We celebrate the achievements of our students – both past and present. We work in partnership with parents and community to assist our students to grow within a caring and family focused environment. To do this we offer a dynamic and hard working staff who are committed to providing meaningful learning opportunities. There is an emphasis placed on literacy and numeracy with remaining subjects being taught through an integrated and holistic approach. Our curriculum places an increasing emphasis on higher order thinking and problem solving. In short we aim to build life long learners – not school time learners.
Welcome Bay School opened in 1979. The school is well resourced and we are proud of our well kept grounds, classroom teaching spaces, adventure playgrounds and native bush areas, solar heated swimming pool, large school hall and netball / tennis courts. Our students also have the luxury of a spacious playing field, which is well utilized for a variety of sports and other activities.
The roll is made up of New Zealand Maori (44%) and NZ European (45%) students. The remaining 11% includes students from the Cook Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, China, Australia, South Africa and other European countries.
We currently have 15 classrooms across the school with a rapidly growing school roll and as a result a school zone was established at the beginning of 2016. We offer a wide range of support programmes for our learners and are proud of the progress that students make across the school.
We promote a family culture throughout our school and use buddy systems, tuakana teina, student leaders and a strong citizenship focus to help us achieve this. We work very hard to develop a positive culture for managing behaviour using the Welcome bay Way to teach expectations and reinforce these using a variety of incentives including a robust House system.
A supportive Board of Trustees provides sound governance and we have an active and supportive parent community, including a wonderfully supportive PTA.
