At primary school there
is huge emphasis
on skill development.

Mother Earth Future Fern Netball Programme is Netball NZ’s official Netball programme for year 1- 8 children. This is a national programme that aims to develop fundamental netball skills and a love of the game at an age appropriate level.

Year 1 -2: Introduces Netball to 5-6 year olds. The aim is to develop fundamental movement and ball skills. The game that follows the skill session is played on 1/3 of a full sized court, by teams of 4, with the emphasis on equal participation.

Year 3-4: Focus is learning basic skills in a modified 5-a-side game, using 2/3’s of a court. Designed to be fun, fast and maximise participation. Positions are rotated so everyone gets an equal chance to develop their skills.

Year 5 Netball continues to be modified for this age group. Players rotate to prevent early specialisation in positions. Emphasis is on all players getting plenty of touches of the ball and the opportunity to develop a broad skill set. The game is played on a full-size court with lowered goal posts and is played 6 v 6.

Year 6: This will be a 6 v 6 game. Year 6 will play on a full sized court with goal posts (2.6m) and compulsory rotation of players.
